In this project we had to make a print using linoleum. First we had to choose animals with texture. I chose an owl and a porcupine. Next we chose two different backgrounds to put our animals in. I picked a tree for the owl and a meadow for the porcupine. We filled up two pages so we could use the view finder and select smaller parts of our sketch that had good composition. Then we had to do a lot of tracing. This was my least favorite part of the project. We then traced the drawing on the linoleum and started carving using a linoleum cutter. I had already decided what colors I was gonna use to make my owl. I had chose white paint and a black piece of paper. I practiced once or twice and then did my final four. Then I chose my best three and was finished.
During this project I learned how to use a linoleum cutter. I liked how easy it was to carve using the cutter and I had a lot of fun carving out the pieces I wanted blank. It felt like it was simplified version of carving patterns into wood. You have a lot of control when using this tool and for me it was very hard to mess up. Over all, I like working with this technique and I hope I work with it again.
There was a lot of work that went into this. It took me quite a long time to pick two animals that I knew would look go and I was capable of making. I thought my owl was creative but I wasn't too confident with my porcupine. I also thought my composition was really good in both of my drawings. The texture was fairly simple and I think my planning went quite well.
I hardly faced any problems when making my print. It wasn't challenging so there was really no reason to screw up too badly in that area. My only fear with this project was carving too deep but it never happened to me. I think that the texture of the owl was the most difficult part but it turned out great and at the end I think this project was very success.
